Democratic Arrangements

Decision making
Meetings of the council happen approximately 7 times a year. These will decide on the budget, major policy issues and plans. An executive, or cabinet, of nine councillors together with the leader of the council make most of the other decisions. Each cabinet member is responsible for an area, or portfolio of council activity.

Scrutiny at Barnet
Barnet's overview and scrutiny committees enable councillors to question the decisions made by the executive and assist in the improvement of policies and performance. These important roles are often called scrutiny.

Other Committees
Area committees made up of ward councillors meet to consider matters of local interest, including planning applications and promote better relationships between the council and the community.

Barnet has a standards committee to oversee the standards of behaviour of councillors and officers, and an audit committee which looks at wide-ranging issues to do with how the council is run.
